About Sherborne Singers

The Sherborne Singers rehearse every Wednesday evening during term times from 7.30pm until 9.30pm with a break for tea/coffee and cakes at half time.

The choir welcomes new members who enjoy singing including both church music and music of a more light-hearted nature. The Sherborne Singers give carol concerts in December each year, sing church services in Salisbury Cathedral and Sherborne Abbey and perform concerts of secular music.

Musical Director

William Slogrove is the Musical Director for the Sherborne Singers. His interest in music began as a chorister at Ely Cathedral, an experience he describes as the best aural and choral repertoire building a child could receive.

After Ely, he studied Music and Education at Exeter, and then moved to Taunton School for his first teaching post as Assistant Director of Music.

Whilst Director of Music at King’s School, Bruton, he produced and directed many choral and orchestral concerts covering much of the repertoire, including Walton’s Belshazzar’s Feast, Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana, Handel’s Dixit Dominus and Vaughan Williams' Sea Symphony.

In 1991 he became proprietor of The Dorset Music House in Sherborne, Dorset from which he has now retired. He is now a freelance musician.

Alongside his teaching and business career, William Slogrove has been associated with, and conducted, the Somerset Youth Orchestra, the Mid Somerset Orchestra, Yeovil Chamber Choir and Wyncantores Choir. He also has his own choir. He performed in, and was responsible for, some of the music in the 1992 version of the film The Browning Version.

Since coming to Sherborne, he instigated and has produced and directed many of Sherborne Abbey's choral and orchestral Christmas Concerts.

He produced and conducted the first Sherborne Abbey Remembrancetide concert in November 2005, with a performance of Karl Jenkins’ Mass for Peace and John Rutter’s Requiem. This was repeated in 2007 with the Puccini Messa di Gloria.

In 2008 he performed Karl Jenkins’ Requiem and In These Stones Horizons Sing, together with David Fanshawe’s The Lord’s Prayer and Dona Nobis Pacem. In November 2012, William Slogrove performed Vaughan Williams' "An Oxford Elegy" and Karl Jenkins' "Stabat Mater". This was his fourth Remembrancetide Concert in Sherborne Abbey.

Having been resident in the South and South West for many years, William Slogrove has produced and directed countless concerts in Dorset, Wiltshire, Somerset and Hampshire and continues to do so.

William Slgrove's music qualifications include a Licentiate of the Royal Academy of Music (LRAM) in voice culture and class singing and a Licentiate of Trinity College, London (LTCL) in piano playing and teaching.
